Manchester 'pressing ahead' with casino
25/07/2007
Plans for a casino and leisure facility in east Manchester have not been completely shelved, the city's council reiterated today.
Following prime minister Gordon Brown's decision to review previous proposals for a casino, the council said it will still press ahead and do its best to secure the mixed-use site for Manchester.
According to city council leader Sir Richard Leese, a meeting between local MPs and the prime minister last week ensured that the door to a casino in the region is not fully shut.
The government has now indicated its intention to review the issue further, the council stated.
"We are looking forward to engaging with the review and making a powerful case," explained Sir Richard.
"We and the government share the same objective, namely the delivery of thousands of jobs in east Manchester."
The proposed casino was to be situated near the recently constructed City of Manchester stadium.
