Manchester remembers bomb anniversary
15/06/2006
The city of Manchester has been marking the tenth anniversary of the IRA bombing with a memorial service.
At 11:17 BST on June 15th 1996, a bomb exploded on Corporation Street, devastating the city centre and injuring more that 200 people.
Today, a memorial service was held at the city's cathedral, attended by VIPs, civic leaders and victims of the bombing.
Lynda Ballam, an eight-year-old pupil from Cheethams' School of Music lit a candle at the exact same time the bomb exploded.
Canon Paul Denby called the candle a symbol of Manchester's rebirth and renewal.
"I have heard many people speak in these past few days of whether the bomb was a good thing," he said.
"I know what they mean, but bombs are never good things and though we rejoice in a city that in many ways, leads not just this country, but the world with its magnificent architecture and vibrant culture, we cannot forget those whose lives were traumatised and for some, remain traumatised by that violent intrusion into their lives."
