Manchester scores highly among students

06/06/2007

A new survey has revealed that Manchester is one of the best places in the country to study at university level.

According to a poll of 34,000 students in 81 universities, Manchester scored a popularity rating of 62 per cent, putting it in joint second place with the likes of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Exeter.

Researchers at Accommodationforstudents.com asked participating students to give points out of ten on areas such as transport, facilities, shops and leisure.

Although the city came second to Aberystwyth, it managed to beat off well-known rivals including Oxford, Cambridge and Liverpool.

Simon Thompson, co-founder of the website, said the survey is useful as it provides a breakdown of the best areas within the cities.

"For instance, in the City of Manchester the area of Fallowfield comes out as the top place to live for students," he remarked.

While students in Manchester will be glad their city achieved such a high ranking, undergraduates who study in the conurbation's other university towns will be less pleased.

Both the borough of Bolton and the City of Salford were at the bottom of the table, scoring 44 per cent.
