Manchester to London in two hours
23/05/2006
Manchester residents could be in London within two hours, due to a planned rail upgrade.
Plans to improve the West Coast Mainline rail link from 2009 will mean that the journey time between London and a number of major UK cities will be shortened.
Part of the reshuffle also means that there will be a direct route from Glasgow to Manchester Airport.
Other cities that will benefit from shorter journey times to London include Liverpool, Birmingham and Coventry.
Rail minister Derek Twigg said: "Passengers have already seen faster journey times and improving reliability delivered by this project and this is why so many more passengers are now using the West Coast Rail Line.
"These improvements from the project are even greater than we thought would be possible when this work started."
Mr Twigg told the Times last weekend that the government wants to encourage more people to use the railways by "making sure attractive prices are available".
