Manchester to celebrate Israel's 60th birthday
21/02/2008
Manchester will be celebrating the 60th birthday of the modern state of Israel on June 29th in what promises to be one of the largest gatherings in the world in support of the country.
The Salute to Israel parade, which is a staple event in New York's calendar, is being held in Manchester and London for the first time.
This year, the parade will focus on the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel and will be followed by a grand finale and family celebrations at Heaton Park.
A spokesperson for the event said: "The Salute to Israel Parade will be a public celebration of the 60th anniversary and will demonstrate affirmation of solidarity with and support of Israel.
"The parade itself will feature a procession featuring floats, marchers and bands performing, representing all parts of the British Jewish community."
Supporters of the parade include the Movement for Reform Judaism, the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and the Manchester Zionist Central Council.
Israel's new ambassador to London, Ron Prosor, recently led an embassy delegation to Manchester and has just presented his credentials to Queen Elizabeth II during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
