Manchester to celebrate a day without traffic
19/09/2007
The heart of Greater Manchester will be free of cars and congestion on September 22nd, it has been announced.
Manchester and Salford have teamed up to host 'In town without my car' day, which means that the space stretching from Manchester Cathedral down to the River Irwell will be traffic free.
The aim of the traffic-free Saturday is to highlight the environmental and health benefits of finding alternatives to the car.
Councillor Neil Swannick said: "This event gives us a taste of just how much both cities could be enhanced if our bid to create the Irwell City Park is successful.
"People are healthier and happier when they are active and there's a whole world to discover when you leave the car at home."
Irwell City Park is a joint proposal by Salford, Manchester and Trafford to build an urban park that runs beside the river.
This is the third time that the two cities have celebrated European Mobility Week, which runs from September 16th to the 22nd.
Other 'green' initiatives include the launch of National Cycle Route 66 between Manchester and Oldham.
