Manchester to consolidate status as 'world city'

04/12/2007

Manchester is a city that has a growing national and global significance, it has been claimed.

Sir Richard Leese, leader of the city council, said that Manchester is a key driver of economic growth in the UK.

His comments came as the city launched two public consultations on strategies designed to consolidate Manchester's economic and cultural successes in the 21st century.

The city centre strategic plan and the regional centre transport strategy suggest ways to improve both the Manchester economy and the transport infrastructure respectively.

Sir Richard said: "Cities are key drivers in the growth of the British economy and it is essential for any successful city to have a healthy central core and to have excellent transport links.

"We want people to have a say in the future of their city and I would urge them to participate in these consultations on the future of the city centre and our transport."

The consultation process runs until the end of January and the draft strategies are available to view on the city council's website.

Meanwhile, the city council is holding a consultation day today at Manchester Art Gallery on Mosley Street between 12:00 and 20:30 GMT.

It means members of the public have the opportunity to look at exhibits and talk to city planners about new developments.
