Manchester to extend rail link with London
11/05/2006
Plans are being made to increase train routes between London and Manchester to more than 80 trains per weekday in 2008, it has been revealed.
The extra service will mean that the route could have 30 more trains a day than the London to Leeds line, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Currently, there are 68 trains per weekday, which is a total of 13 more than the London to Leeds route and seven more than Newcastle's link with the UK's capital.
However, the proposed increase in trains has led to complaints from the Leeds Chamber of Commerce (LCC).
Ian Williams, policy director for the LCC, said: "One of the factors that helps determine the economic performance of a region is the speed and frequency of its rail service to and from London.
"Leeds and Manchester are both 185 miles from London; they both serve as the hub stations for a region of more than 2 million people and they deserve the same frequency of train service to and from London."
Manchester Piccadilly, the city's link to London, underwent construction in 2000 to increase its size as the city prepared for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
