Manchester to host special Fairtrade evening
01/03/2007
To mark Fairtrade Fortnight, Manchester is hosting a special regional wine and cheese evening on March 5th and has invited a special guest to join the celebrations.
Along with the Northwest Food Alliance, the city will hold the event at the town hall in an effort to raise the profile of Fairtrade produce in Greater Manchester. The city council is encouraging restaurants, cafes and suppliers to participate in an industry worth £300 million a year.
Manchester, which became a Fairtrade city in 2005, has invited Kuapa Kokoo, the Ghanaian cocoa farmer's cooperative that co-owns the company, Divine Chocolate, to the town hall, thereby stressing the city's commitment to ethical living.
Councillor Sue Murphy, chair of the Fairtrade Manchester steering group, said: "By simply making small changes in the way we act as consumers we can allow other people to make changes towards a better way of life.
"If enough of us choose to buy Fairtrade products a community in Africa, Asia, or Latin America can build more classrooms, employ a part-time nurse or construct a road so they can get their goods to market."
Other city celebrations include various Fairtrade market stalls and promotions in Wythenshawe, Gorton Longsight, Stretford, Exchange Square and Piccadilly Gardens.
