Manchester to host the future in 2008
16/08/2007
A four-day global technology conference is to be held in the city next year, it has been announced.
The event is being held to celebrate the 60th birthday of the modern computer, which was built by University of Manchester researchers in 1948.
Independent trade association Manchester Digital is organising the convention and is hoping to attract high-profile speakers and innovators from around the world to discuss the future of technology.
The association hopes that the Futurology: 2008 Manchester UK conference will become an annual happening and rival a similar event in the US called TED, which attracts the likes of Bill Clinton and Bono.
Shaun Fensom, chair of Manchester Digital, said: "Technology is entering all aspects of our lives - in business and leisure - and the pace of technological change is getting faster.
"The Futurology conference gives us a chance to get the bigger picture - share insight across all areas of business and society and discuss how the future will affect us."
All blogs and records of the conference and its presentations will be made available free of charge on the internet.
The main objective of Manchester Digital is to promote the city's digital business sector and to attract national and global business investment.
