Manchester to lead cutting-edge health research
19/06/2008
Half a dozen NHS trusts in Manchester and Salford have teamed up with the University of Manchester in an effort to become a world-leading hub for health research.
The Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC) aims to have several world-class research programmes launched by 2014.
It will be the first academic health science centre in Britain to cover the "full spectrum" of care, including mental health, acute, specialist and primary care.
Manchester AHSC director Professor Alan North said: "Greater Manchester has a proud history of scientific achievement in health research based on a number of major strengths.
"[But] there is growing evidence that the city-region is not realising its full potential as a health research centre and opportunities exist for a more strategic focus in health research."
Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and the University Hospital of South Manchester are among the trusts involved in the project.
Earlier this week, care services minister Ivan Lewis was in Manchester as part of a national tour to ensure that all NHS patients are treated with respect and dignity at all times.
