Manchester to mark liberation of Auschwitz with film event
25/01/2008
Manchester is marking Holocaust Memorial Day with a film event at the Cornerhouse this evening.
Two short films portraying the atrocities of the Holocaust are to be shown to secondary school students. The event will involve survivor Steven Frank, community representatives and city leaders.
Manchester City Council and the UK Jewish Film Festival joined forces to organise the event.
The lord mayor, councillor Glynn Evans, said: "Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity for everyone to commemorate the remarkable resilience of the human spirit."
Another event - called Jewish Refugees in Manchester 1938-1945 - will be held at Crumpsall Library on January 31st.
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated on January 27th each year, marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Earlier this month, Israeli ambassador Ron Prosor led a delegation of Israeli embassy workers to Manchester to meet communities and businesses.
The aim of the trip is to present the case for Israel as it comes under attack from missiles in the south of the country, and to lend support to Jewish communities.
