Manchester trailing in super-casino stakes
25/07/2006
Manchester has finished eighth out of eight in the list of preferred super-casino venues, it has emerged.
The first round of judging by the Casino Advisory Panel has placed the city at the bottom of the shortlist, preferring the Millennium Dome as the ideal venue.
The dome, in Greenwich, south London, was marked with 67 points out of 80, compared to Manchester's 57 points.
Glasgow, Blackpool and Sheffield were the next highest points scorers, but there is still time for the panel to change their decision before a final verdict is given at the end of the year.
The super-casino will be a Las Vegas-style complex and the first of its kind in the UK.
In the spring, local authorities from around the country submitted their applications for the casino, with just eight being chosen for consideration.
Other local authorities on the final shortlist include Cardiff, Brent and Newcastle.
