Manchester waiter in 'organs-for-sale scandal'
08/01/2007
A Manchester youth agreed to sell a number of his body parts for £90,000, according to an exclusive report in The Sun
Undercover reporter Oliver Harvey met up with Umer Maqbool, 24, after the latter posted an ad on the internet putting his body parts up for sale.
By the end of the meeting Maqbool had agreed to sell a kidney, a section of his liver - and was willing to consider selling a cornea too, according to Harvey.
"I want to buy a house for my family in Pakistan and start a business, a shop or something," Maqbool allegedly said.
In response to the article, a Guardian writer David Batty asked: "Is it time to consider setting up a legal market in human body parts?"
The trade in live human body parts remains illegal in the UK and the US.
