Manchester wins University Challenge

16/05/2006

The University of Manchester became the first institution from the north-west to win BBC Two's University Challenge last night.

Cambridge Trinity College were defeated 160 points to 150 in yesterday's final.

Manchester's team consisted of three Preston-based players, Joseph Meagher, Chris Holmes and Adrian Anslow, as well as Astrophysics specialist Gareth Aubrey.

The team, whose expertise ranged across politics, material science and mathematics, were picked and trained by Stephen Pearson from the university's John Rylands Library.

Joseph Meagher, who lives with his wife and two children in Avenham, was the side's captain throughout their run in the competition.

He told the Lancashire Evening Post: "The final was extremely tight, it was great television and we were delighted to come out on top."

University Challenge used to appear on Granada Television, until it was cancelled in 1987.

The show then returned to the small screen in the 1990s and is produced by the BBC in Manchester.
