Manchester's green assets to receive £5m boost

27/05/2008

Natural England has pledged an extra £5 million for green projects in Greater Manchester.

The government biodiversity organisation says the money is needed to support the recovery of degraded mosslands in Salford, Bolton and Wigan, which are useful in trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Work includes blocking ditches and restoring water levels to create suitable conditions for bog vegetation.

Liz Newton, regional director for Natural England, said: "This new funding will help us to work with partners across the north-west to deliver practical projects on the ground.

"[These] will not only bring benefits to wildlife and habitats but will bring nature into people's lives, help support tourism and enhance the quality of life and the image of our region."

Last month, the Northwest Regional Development Agency announced it plans to spend £17.3 million creating 170 hectares of green spaces in Warrington and Cheshire.
