Mapping Manchester this weekend
12/05/2006
An experiment in "citizen cartography" is taking place in Manchester this weekend, as part of a scheme that is trying to challenge Ordinance Survey's (OS) monopoly on mapping data.
People of Manchester are being asked to help create a unique map using global positioning system (GPS) technology under the project name of Mapchester.
Organisers aim to get volunteers to move around the city noting down road names, which will consequently be added to an online database on Openstreetmap.org.
The idea behind the venture is to produce a new type of Manchester map, which is produced through community effort and will be copyright-free.
Volunteers are being encouraged to head to 117-119 Portland Street, the Manchester Digital Development Agency building, where welcome briefings will be held at 10:00 BST and 14:00 BST on Saturday May 13th and Sunday May 14th.
People can map for as long as they like and GPS devices will be provided.
There will be a number of Mapchester-related projects that will take place during the Futuresonic festival, which runs from July 20th to July 23rd 2006.
