Martin Amis lands Manchester teaching post
16/02/2007
Award-winning novelist Martin Amis has been appointed creative writing professor at the University of Manchester and will run postgraduate seminars from September.
Author of 11 novels, including Money and London Fields, Mr Amis will teach at the newly-established Centre for New Writing and will also participate in four events open to the public each year, including a two-week summer school.
The university has said the appointment of Mr Amis confirms the institution as one of the leading places in the world to study creative writing.
"I think I may have something to offer as a teacher and it's always been a quiet ambition of mine to give it my best try," Mr Amis said.
"I look forward to a new milieu with new colleagues and it will give me a chance to find out more about that shadowy and inscrutable demographic group – the young."
Other high-profile writers at the university include novelist Patricia Duncker, Irish poet Vona Groarke and poet John McAuliffe.
Mr Amis' latest book, The Pregnant Widow, will be published sometime next year.
