'Massive overcrowding' on Bolton trains
05/03/2007
Overcrowding on trains between Bolton and Manchester is becoming a major headache for rush hour commuters as the number of passengers continues to increase, a new study has found.
According to Greater Manchester's public transport authority, trains are running at 30 per cent above seating capacity and passenger groups are now calling for policymakers to provide extra capacity at the busiest times.
However, a spokesman TransPennine Express, which operates the service, said that the firm does not have any more trains to put into service, reports Bolton News.
Tony Fawthrop, from the regional passenger transport campaign, told the paper: "We've got chronic overcrowding between Bolton and Manchester. It's pretty uncomfortable and a large number of people can't actually get on at some stations."
Public transport bosses have said they are negotiating with Northern Rail over the possibility of leasing extra carriages but made have it clear that the move would need to represent good value for money.
Meanwhile, policymakers are working on proposals to introduce a road-charging scheme on various transport corridors in Greater Manchester. However, opponents are worried that trains and buses will not cope with the extra passengers.
