Metrolink confirms tram order
25/06/2008
Metrolink has confirmed that it has put in an order for 28 trams to run on Greater Manchester's three new lines.
The trams will run on lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside, and Chorlton in south Manchester.
Philip Purdy, Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive Metrolink director, expects the trams to be busy with "more than 90,000 journeys being taken on the Metrolink network every day when the extensions open".
He added: "I'm looking forward to seeing the new model of tram become a familiar sight across Greater Manchester."
The trams will cost just over £2 million apiece and have room for 200 passengers each. Mr Purdy described them as being "state-of-the-art" machines.
Construction work on the new Metrolink lines is due to start early next year with a deadline date of spring 2011 having been pencilled in.
