Metrolink decision welcomed
07/07/2006
Manchester's Metorlink system is to be expanded, the government has said, in a move that has been welcomed by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA).
Douglas Alexander, the secretary of state for transport, has approved the expansion and the process to select contractors to carry out the expansion will begin.
"Metrolink has already given Manchester a huge social and economic boost and the expansion of the network will play a vital role in the continued regeneration of the region," commented councillor Andrew Fender, a spokesman for the GMTPA.
Since its launch in 1992, Manchester's tram system has grown rapidly and now carries up to 20 million people every year.
The new section will expand it to Rochdale train station at the expense of the rail link and other parts will serve New East Manchester, the City of Manchester Stadium and the Velodrome.
As long as the project remains in budget, the GMPTA believes that the new lines could be open in two years.
