04/08/2008
Plan to invest in the expansion of the Metrolink could boost the city-region's economy by as much as £160 million by 2026, a new study has revealed.
According to research commissioned by Manchester Enterprises, more than 3,200 new jobs would be created over the next two decades as a result of investment in the light rail network.
Wide-scale expansion of Metrolink can only go ahead if a congestion charge is introduced to help finance the investment.
The report says that light rail improvements will attract encourage people to stay in Greater Manchester and act as a magnet for new employees.
Moreover, expanding the Metrolink would increase the value of the city-region's housing stock by up to £515 million, the report stated.
More than two million residents across Greater Manchester have been sent a full-colour brochure explaining the merits of a congestion charge and investments in public transport.
The public will have their chance to vote on the proposal later this year.
