Metrolink fares to increase

07/11/2007

Metrolink fares are to rise after being frozen for around two and a half years, it has been announced.

Single and return fares will rise by an average of 5.7 per cent and season tickets will remain the same until next February. However, some family tickets will be reduced and child fares will not change at all.

The new fares will come into force on Sunday November 18th and Manchester transport chiefs are encouraging passengers to take advantage of weekly, monthly, three-monthly and annual season tickets in order to save money.

Michael Renshaw, Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive services director, said: "Metrolink provides a fast, reliable alternative to driving into the city centre and is still good value for money.

"Some passengers will be able to save over £20 a month by buying a four-weekly ticket instead of return tickets each weekday."

Following improvements to the Bury and Altrincham lines, Manchester transport bosses are investing up to £540 million on new Metrolink lines to Chorlton, Tameside, Oldham and Rochdale.
