Metrolink goes hydroelectric
04/06/2008
Metrolink has become the first light rail system in the country to be powered using water following a deal between Manchester transport bosses and Scottish and Southern Energy.
The power company is providing hydroelectricity to run Metrolink, which is now one of the most environmentally-friendly public transport systems in the UK.
A recent survey by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) found that nearly one in five people say they have changed the way they travel due to fears about climate change.
Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink director, said: "About a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions come from transport, and we want to do our bit to reduce them.
"Anyone who travels on Metrolink instead of using their car is already helping to fight climate change as trams are nearly four times better for the environment."
Last month, transport secretary Ruth Kelly pledged £244 million for the extension of the Metrolink network to Rochdale, Oldham and Chorlton.
