Metrolink track replacement to begin next year
14/11/2006
Metrolink journeys across Greater Manchester are set to become more comfortable for passengers as major improvements to the network are made next year.
A number of worn-out tram lines, some of which are over 50-years-old, are to be replaced in summer 2007 in a project likely to cost £102 million.
Parts of the track between Altrincham and Bury will be replaced by Carillion Construction.
David Leather, from Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, said that the track between Bury and Altrincham is "rapidly approaching the end of its natural life".
"It's noisy for residents and uncomfortable for passengers. It's also making the service unreliable as the Metrolink vehicles need frequent repairs," he added.
Other improvements include new ticket machines, eight new trams and various stop upgrades.
