Millions of pounds awarded to Salford schools
04/07/2007
Greater Manchester pupils are set to be the beneficiaries of £150 million of government money, it has emerged.
As part of the Building Schools for the Future programme, Salford has been given the cash in order to finance new amenities and rebuild some of the city's schools.
Around £17 million of the investment will be spent on brand-new ICT facilities, while there are also plans to build an academy on the new media city development at the quays.
"The chance to invest over £150 million in Salford high schools to transform them into 21st century learning environments is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said council leader John Merry.
"This is not just a building programme, it is just as much about investing in teaching and learning and the facilities that will best allow our pupils to aspire and achieve."
In June, the government announced the Greater Manchester Challenge, a £50 million project to raise standards in schools across the city-region.
The three-year initiative begins in 2008 and aims to "crack the cycle of low attainment" among the most disadvantaged primary and secondary schools.
