More money for Metrolink improvements
04/02/2008
Transport minister Tom Harris has signed off the last part of a £102 million finance package to improve Manchester's Metrolink system.
The latest round of funding (£25.7million) will pay for renovation works on existing tracks and bridges, as well as new cabling and overhead lines.
Mr Harris said the funding package is "historic" and ensures Metrolink is fit for passengers in the 21st century.
"The tram is clearly important to Manchester's travelling public and I am glad that its long-term future is now secured.
"I congratulate Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive on delivering renewal work so far on time and within budgets, despite poor weather conditions."
In July 2006 the Department for Transport granted conditional approval to extend Metrolink to Oldham, Rochdale and Chorlton.
Meanwhile, the cost of some Metrolink season tickets increased on Friday February 1st, following the introduction of new single and return fares in November.
