Morrissey declines Eurovision request
23/02/2007
It has been confirmed that Morrissey, the former frontman of iconic Manchester band the Smiths, will not be involved with the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.
Having expressed an interest in entering the competition after last year's poor result, the BBC has now said it is "unable to go ahead with him".
It was in January that the BBC asked Morrissey to write and perhaps perform a song for Eurovision, a move that surprised both Eurovision and Smiths fans.
A BBC spokeswoman said the corporation "approached several artists and Morrissey was one of those that expressed an interest".
She added: "Unfortunately, we were unable to go ahead with him being involved and we can now confirm that he definitely will not be taking part in this year's competition."
While the official excuse is that the timing was not right for Morrissey, many believe the singer was put off by the fact he would have been required to take part in a BBC One talent show for the UK nomination.
The UK made its debut entry in 1957 and has won the competition five times. This year, a record-breaking 42 countries will be represented at the contest.
