Multi-million pound boost for Longsight Library

22/07/2008

As part of a major refurbishment to improve and expand services in Longsight, about £2 million pounds will be spent on the local library, it has been announced.

A £2.3 million library and learning centre will be under one roof following investment from the city council and the Learning Skills Council Challenge Fund.

The building will contain a new and improved children's zone, including an area for young people to read or surf the internet and to do their homework. The first floor will feature the new learning centre, as well as a recreation and community area.

Councillor Mike Amesbury said: "This is fantastic news for Longsight and is part of our long-term commitment to see libraries at the heart of every community in Manchester."

The 14-month project is expected to begin in the first half of 2009. During the refurbishment, a temporary library will be available at the Youth Services building on Stockport Road.

Meanwhile, there have been reports that Manchester's Central Library could shut for years to allow for the £150 million refurbishment of the building.
