New kind of peep show comes to Manchester
04/09/2007
A city arts project called The Peeps has been unveiled and members of the public will be able to glimpse specially-lit objects through holes in old buildings.
World-renowned artist and architect Dan Dubowitz is behind the installations, which can be found in 20 locations, including a disused mill and a bell tower, in Ancoats.
The objects, which refer to Manchester's illustrious past, can only be discovered by people curious enough to seek out the artistic treasures. The only clues are the brass casts in the walls.
Mr Dubowitz told the BBC: "This is a place in flux and this installation reflects that. Gradually the scaffolding is coming down around Ancoats and people are moving back in.
"It is not about the project being complete; this is a work that will always be transforming."
The project was funded by the North West Regional Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.
Ancoats is often regarded as the oldest industrial suburb in the world and it is now enjoying a sustained period of regeneration.
