New route for Great Manchester Run

19/05/2006

This year's BUPA Great Manchester Run, which takes place this Sunday, has a different course to last year.

Despite the slight change of route, the 10km event will still start and end in the city centre.

Beginning on Portland Street, just off of Piccadilly Gardens, runners will then pass the G-Mex exhibition centre, the Bridgewater Hall and Deansgate Locks before heading for Trafford and Salford Quays.

Taking in sites such as Manchester United's Old Trafford Stadium, as well as the Imperial War Museum, competitors will then move back on to the Chester Road, finishing in Deansgate.

A total of 25,000 runners will be taking part in the event, which is now in its fourth year.

According to the organisers, over 1,920 of those taking part in the event will be raising money for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.

BBC newsreader Bill Turnbull, as well as actors Denise Welch and Susie Blake, are among the first celebrities to run in aid of the organisation.

Action gets underway from 09:00 BST on Sunday May 21st and those wanting to follow the race can watch it on a big screen at the G-Mex or listen to proceedings on BBC Greater Manchester Radio.
