New school may be built on Maine Road
19/06/2008
A new primary school may be built on the site of Manchester City FC's former Maine Road stadium in Moss Side, it has emerged.
Councillors will give their verdict on the proposal to build a 420-place Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided school at a top-level meeting today.
If the project is given the green light, the school - which would also include a 60-place nursery - will open on September 1st 2009.
The new school would be a merger of the Bishop Bilsborrow RC Primary School and St Edward's RC School, both of which are currently in poor accommodation, according to the council.
Councillor Sheila Newman said: "This new school is set to be another exciting step in the transformation of Moss Side.
"It would give young people the very best environment for learning, helping improve educational standards as well as supporting other developments in the area."
Maine Road stadium, demolished in 2004, was Manchester City Football Club's home between 1923 and 2003.
The club is now situated at the City of Manchester Stadium, which was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
