Oldham nursery shut after E.coli outbreak
16/05/2007
The Health Protection Agency has had to shut down a nursery in Greater Manchester after several children and staff contracted the food bug E.coli.
Ambrose Nook nursery in Oldham is currently being investigated by health experts and microbiologists who are trying to trace the source of the infection.
Several children and staff have been affected and one hospitalised child is said to be "serious but stable".
Doctor Mark Petrovic, an expert in health protection, said: "We can confirm six children who attend the Ambrose Nook Nursery in Oldham have been diagnosed with E.coli O157 infection.
"We haven't identified a source of infection at this stage but our priority is to do all we can to prevent further cases occurring and to bring the outbreak to an end."
Parents have been given a leaflet on E.coli O157 and have been told to look out for symptoms, which include diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.
