Parents consulted on single-sex schools
28/06/2006
Consultations will take place in Manchester next month to gauge the opinions of pupils and parents on single-sex schools.
Lasting until July 14th, the discussions will try to discover if there is still a demand for such schools in the city.
The research is being undertaken as the council plans to revamp the city's high schools under the Government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative.
Councillor Jeff Smith, Manchester City Council's executive member for education, said: "The massive investment in our schools through BSF gives us the chance to completely transform secondary education in Manchester and brings with it a unique opportunity to plan for the future.
"In some parts of the city there is a shortage of co-educational school places. At the same time there seems to be a decline in demand for single-sex education."
He adds that Manchester's parent population is being consulted to see if they "still want single-sex education and if so how this can best be accommodated".
Current single-sex institutions in Manchester include Burnage High School (for boys) and North Manchester High School for Girls.
