Pensioners' playground open in Blackley
31/01/2008
The UK's first outdoor play area aimed at the elderly has opened in Manchester.
A cross between a children's playground and a gym, the Older People's Play Area on the Dam Head Estate in Blackley includes a cycling machine, a see-saw and equipment to strengthen hips, legs and the upper body.
The £15,000 park is modelled after a similar play area in Germany and was set up by a local residents' association.
Peggy Yuill, a member of the local residents association, told Reuters: "You can take the grandchildren to the under fives play area and if there is someone to watch them you can have a go on the adult playground.
"It is for the elderly but anyone can use it. The most important thing is that you cannot hurt yourself and it won't go any faster than what your body wants it to do."
The play area was paid for by Northwards Housing, a not-for-profit organisation that manages council housing in north Manchester.
