Pie factory leads Salford's media dream
02/02/2007
An old pie factory is set to be the first business to open in Salford's proposed MediaCity at the Quays.
The former Freshbake factory on Broadway is being transformed into new studios for independent television companies and has already been used by firms including Tightrope and Hat Trick Productions.
Now called The Pie Factory, the site includes 50,000 sq ft of sound stages and 20,000 sq ft of office space, as well as some set-building space, reports the Salford Advertiser.
The TV factory will soon be accompanied by hundreds of other media businesses, the most famous being the BBC, which will move several department to MediaCity in the next few years.
Andy Sumner, who owns Manchester-based post-production firm Sumner's, told the newspaper: "The major developer Peel [Holdings] wanted to get something going before the BBC even arrives and there are lots of companies wanting to come to The Pie Factory.
"MediaCity is going to employ thousands of people and the place will become a media centre for the whole of the UK, if not Europe and the world."
According to developers, the proposed 24-hour media hub will consist of 7 million sq ft of new and refurbished floorspace, and will bring £1.5 billion to the north-west economy.
