Plane in 'near-miss' at Manchester airport
08/12/2006
A passenger plane was involved in a near miss incident at Manchester airport, according to reports.
Unaware that the runway had been reduced in length, crew on an Excel Airways Boeing 737 proceeded with a take-off that almost hit maintenance vehicles in what has been described as a potentially "serious incident".
The report states that the pilot and crew had thought they had cleared the vehicles by some margin, with the plane carrying 190 passengers and travelling to Kos.
An Air Accidents Investigation Branch report obtained by the BBC states: "The serious incident which triggered this investigation resulted from a non-adherence to established procedures by the flight crew, rather than a failing in the procedures themselves.
"The operator took early and appropriate action to prevent a recurrence by the crew involved."
Meanwhile, changes to car park rules at Manchester Airport have resulted in reduced congestion around terminal buildings.
Cheapflights reports that no-waiting rules have been implemented, which have reduced the number of drivers waiting in the arrivals area.
