Plans to restore listed building
02/06/2006
A £21 million proposal to restore a burnt-down Grade II listed building in Greater Manchester has been approved by planners.
The re-building of a Victorian market hall in Ashton-under-Lyne, which was destroyed in a fire in 2004, now has the backing of local planning authorities and Tameside Council, the BBC reports.
Construction proposals include the replacement of the original building, as well as the enlargement of the civic square that surrounds it.
Stallholders have had to move to the Phoenix Market Hall and have indicated that trade has been affected, the BBC reports.
Tameside Council consulted local shoppers and traders on their opinions before submitting its plans in February.
The fire occurred in the early hours of May 25th 2004.
Reported shortly after 03:00 BST, it took around 90 fire officers from around the region to put the flames out.
Most of the items inside the building, which dates back to 1829, were destroyed.
