Police appeal for information after failed baby abduction
14/08/2007
Police in Greater Manchester are looking for a couple who tried to steal a baby from its pram at the weekend.
On Sunday evening, the mother of the four-month-old baby girl was taking a stroll when she had to fight off a man and a woman who tried to snatch the baby.
The couple was unsuccessful in their attempt to abduct the baby, partly because the child was strapped into her pram and because the mother "put up a determined fight".
In the scuffle, the mother punched the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground.
The incident took place on Wigan Road in Leigh and police are eager to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened or who saw the couple before the incident.
"We need to catch these people before they put another mother through a similar ordeal," said Detective Sergeant Graham Rigby, of Wigan CID.
Detectives have been provided with a detailed description of the potential kidnappers both of whom were wearing black knitted gloves.
The man was described as white, about 5ft 7-inches tall with a muscular build and very short black hair.
The woman, also white, is about 5ft 6-inches tall, has black hair scraped back into a bun and 'piercing' green eyes.
Detectives also want to hear from anyone who saw a couple arguing in Atherleigh Way, near Sainsbury's supermarket on Sunday evening.
Anyone with information can contact Wigan CID or Crimestoppers.
