Police investigate death of arrested man
14/04/2008
Police are seeking to establish why a man arrested in connection with a theft quickly fell ill and died in hospital on Friday.
Detectives had been seeking the arrest of the 41-year-old man and officers discovered him asleep at a bus stop on Hyde Road in Gorton at around 16:15 BST on Thursday.
He fell ill on arriving at Ashton police station where he was taken into custody and was taken to Tameside General Hospital for treatment as a result.
But the man died at around 15:30 BST on Friday after having deteriorated overnight. A post-mortem was carried out on Saturday.
Greater Manchester police said the man "appeared to have injuries to his face" at the time of his arrest.
Its major incident team is leading the investigation into how the injuries were received.
This comes as police investigate the death of a 28-year-old male who was found at the side of the road in Kingsway, Stretford.
He received severe head injuries consistent with having been hit by a vehicle.
