Police officer killed during training exercise
10/06/2008
A Greater Manchester Police officer has died after being shot by a colleague's gun in a training exercise yesterday.
Pc Ian Terry, 32, was engaged in a training exercise in Newton Heath when he received a single gunshot wound to the chest at around 11:30 BST.
He was hurried to North Manchester general hospital where he was pronounced dead by medics.
The GMP said inquiries into the circumstances around the incident are ongoing but stressed that the training exercise was "routine".
Home secretary Jacqui Smith told MPs: "The whole House [of Commons] will be saddened to learn of the tragic death today of a police officer during a training exercise with Greater Manchester Police.
"This demonstrates the dangers that police officers face on our behalf."
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed of the incident and has already sent investigators to the scene of the incident.
A spokesman for the IPCC spokesman said officers has been using special munitions designed to stop vehicles which contain armed criminals.
