Race to watch GB athletes in Manchester
27/06/2006
The choice of Manchester as host of the Norwich Union European Championship athletic trials is "exciting" news, according to city councillor Mark Hackett.
A total of 12,000 spectators are expected to turn up during the weekend of July 15th to July 16th, in what would be two sell-out days for the Manchester Regional Arena.
Some of the best known faces in British athletics will be competing at the event, as well as up-and-coming national talent.
Athletes will be aiming to qualify for the European Championships, which take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, in August.
Councillor Mark Hackett, executive member for culture and leisure at Manchester City Council, said: "This is an exciting time for Manchester.
"We have significantly built on the legacy of the [Commonwealth] Games and are now seeing the results of a solid sporting infrastructure. I am sure the trials will be a great spectator event and a chance for Great Britain to showcase their talent."
In related sports news, Manchester's Sportcity visitor centre, on the same road as the Regional Arena, recorded its 6,000th visitor last week.
The centre details the history of the east Manchester area, as well as future plans for the sporting complex.
