Radcliffe to get new £1 million bus station

12/10/2006

Plans to overhaul Radcliffe town centre now include a proposal to build a £1 million bus station to replace the current 1980s structure.

Bury Council and the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) are jointly funding the station, which will probably be built on a 3.3 acre site near the River Irwell and the market hall.

The council also plans to redevelop the market and build a new art gallery, museum, library and shops. It also hopes to build 300 new flats.

This is Lancashire reports councillor and spokesman for the GMPTA, John Byrne, as saying: "Millions of pounds are being invested in Radcliffe over the next few years. I'm delighted that the plans for the town include a new bus station.

"I hope the proposed new bus station will help to tackle congestion in the town by encouraging more people to leave their cars behind and use the bus instead."

Meanwhile, a £2 million transformation of Bolton train station has been put on hold due to worries over costs.
