Remembrance service for Stockport air disaster

04/06/2007

Victims and survivors of the Stockport air disaster in 1967 were remembered at a special service at the crash site at Hopes Carr.

Forty years ago, 72 passengers and crew died when a British Midlands flights returning from Majorca suffered a fuel problem and crashed in Stockport town centre.

Stockport mayor, councillor June Somekh, said: "The ceremony was time for everyone to reflect and remember those people who lost their lives in the crash and those who fought so heroically to rescue them."

Survivors, rescuers, relatives and councillors paid tribute to the victims with a minute of silence around a freshly-planted rose tree in memory of those who died.

Vivienne Thornber, one of the survivors had been saved by PC Bill Oliver, who arrived first on the crash scene and managed to rescue some ten passengers.

"So many people suffered terrible loss and the memories live on 40 years later," she added.
