Report: Manchester University should lower entry grades

The University of Manchester should consider lowering admissions requirements for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, according to a new report.

In an interim review of undergraduate education, vice-chancellor Professor Alan Gilbert said there should be a range of entry grades and "meritocratic" admissions procedures.

Measurements other than A-Level grades could also be taken into consideration as this would help identify good students who went to a poor-performing secondary school, he said.

A spokesman for the university told the Telegraph: "We are conducting a wide-ranging inquiry into undergraduate education from admission to graduation and are exploring dozens of issues relating to that.

"No decisions have been taken."

The government has previously said it wants 50 per cent of young adults to get a university education by 2010.
