Residents urged to join campaign against post office closures

06/07/2008

Residents are being asked to join a council-led campaign to save three post offices in Salford.

Under a nationwide plan by the Post Office, the Lewis Street branch in Patricroft is due to close, as are outlets on Oldfield Road and Langworthy Road.

City councillors are asking for help in making a formal objection to the proposals, urging customers to give their stories about what would happen if the branches closed.

The city council has produced a questionnaire that is available online and in the three affected post offices, and there is also a special telephone line.

Councillor David Lancaster said the closure of the post offices would have a "devastating" impact on communities.

"We can put the economic and social arguments against closure but what we want is the people who use the post offices to tell us about the personal impact of losing their local office," he said.

The council has until July 21st to respond to the Post Office about the proposed closures.

According to the Post Office, more than 80 per cent of branches will be unaffected by changes to the national network.
