Road toll exemptions to be voted on this Friday
24/06/2008
The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (Agma) will vote on exemptions to the proposed two-tier congestion charge this week.
At a meeting in Swinton this Friday, councillors will decide on which drivers would avoid the road toll and then the proposals will be put out for consultation to businesses and the public.
It is thought that motorcyclists and black cab drivers would not a pay a charge, while people on low incomes could receive a 20 per cent discount.
Cars entering Trafford Park may be offered a 50 per cent reduction until the proposed Metrolink line to the industrial development is completed in around eight years' time.
Lord Peter Smith, leader of Agma, told Crain's Manchester Business magazine: "Our proposals have always been about limiting the cost of congestion to businesses, not increasing costs."
Under current plans, the perimeter of the inner ring of the congestion zone would run along Queens Road to the north, Alan Turing Way to the east, Trafford Road and Fredrick Road to the west and either Wilbraham Road or Hathersage Road to the south.
An outer ring is likely to map onto the orbital M60.
