Rochdale Canal patrols created to reduce vandalism

17/10/2006

Police in Manchester are teaming up with British Waterways in order to make the Rochdale Canal safer for the public.

Concerns among residents in Ancoats, Miles Platting and Newton Heath have led to the creation of patrols along the waterway.

Foot and water patrols will be undertaken in an effort to reduce vandalism and other forms of anti-social behaviour.

Jimmy Swindells, Rochdale Canal supervisor, said: "The Rochdale Canal is a magnificent waterway stretching 32 miles from the heart of Manchester to Sowerby Bridge. Over the past six months, the number of anti-social behaviour incidents has risen.

"By working in partnership with Greater Manchester Police and other key agencies, with the new patrols now being imposed, the canal will become a safer and nicer place for people to visit."

Control of the canal was passed to British Waterways in 2000 and £23.8 million was spent on restoration.
