Rochdale interchange receives funding boost
03/08/2007
A plot of land in Rochdale is to be decontaminated and flood defence walls are to be improved so that a new £11.5 million public transport interchange can be built.
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) has agreed to contribute £800,000 to the project, which will go towards treating the ground and building up the River Roch's flood defences.
Transport chiefs hope that the interchange on Smith Street will not only be a massive regeneration boost to the north Manchester borough but will complement plans to bring the Metrolink tram system to the town centre.
The North West Regional Assembly has identified the construction of Rochdale Transport Interchange as a priority for the city-region.
Councillor Allen Brett, the GMPTA vice chair, said: "I'm pleased we've been able to provide this money as it shows the plan to build a state-of-the-art public transport interchange in Rochdale is becoming a reality."
Earlier this week, Greater Manchester submitted its bid for £3 billion of central government funding to pay for the overhaul of the conurbation's public transport system.
If the bid is successful, the money will be spent on a Metrolink extension and improvements to trains and buses.
