Rochdale redevelopment plans on show

20/12/2007

Rochdale residents are being urged to head over to Yorkshire Street to give their views on three new designs for the transformation of the town centre and the creation of a riverside district.

The three displays show proposals for the regeneration of the east side with new leisure facilities, retailers, a supermarket, offices, restaurants, cafes, bars, a hotel, improved parking, apartments and an open air theatre.

Organised by the Rochdale Development Agency, the consultation runs from 10:00 GMT to 15:00 GMT today.

John Hudson, chief executive of Rochdale Development Agency, said: "It is an exciting time for Rochdale and we're hoping local people will take time out to drop in and share their views.

"None of the proposals are set in stone which is why it's important for people to tell us the elements they most like."

The designs are part of a wider regeneration of Rochdale that includes a new transport interchange on Smith Street by 2010, as well as new public facilities and civic offices.

Manchester transport bosses are confident that the interchange will provide a massive regeneration boost to Rochdale and complement plans to extend the Metrolink to the north Manchester borough.
